As I write it is 3 days and counting to the start of the London Olympics and I am just a little bit excited! I know it might rain, the sponsors are controversial, there’ll probably be traffic problems, and it has cost a lot – but it’s the Olympics and it’s in my adopted home town. Last night, as a volunteer for the Games, I got the opportunity to go to a technical rehearsal of the Opening Ceremony and what we saw was spectacular. I can’t say any more as we’ve been asked to #savethesurprise. Just watch it!
Most of the major retailers are also marking London 2012, with discounts on alcoholic beverages to help us celebrate the occasion and sporting successes. One of the most dramatic offers I’ve found is at Tesco with a pair of Cavas reduced to almost a third of the price. Jaume Serra Rosé Reserva Gran Seleccion and its white sibling are on offer at £5 -down from £12 and £12.99 respectively – through until 12 August.
The price is really attractive, so what about the wines?
The rosé was the one I enjoyed most. It’s made from Trepat (a local grape variety) and Pinot Noir. It has a hot pink, almost scarlet, colour and vigorous bubbles. A delicate raspberry and apple nose is followed on the palate by red fruit flavours of sweet cherries, raspberries and sharp redcurrants. The acidity was a little fierce for me. I thought the flavours dropped away pretty quickly at first, but, in fact, you do get some light, lingering raspberry flavours with this fizz. By the way, the alcohol level is 11.5%
For me, this isn’t a £12 sparkler. But while on offer, if you like rosé Cava, then you might give this a go.

The Jaume Serra Brut Reserva Gran Seleccion was too aggressively acidic for my tastes. It’s appley on the nose and palate but has a rather bitter minerality. Interestingly, when I went back to it the next day, it was much softer and more fruity. I’m not sure though that many people drink Cava on the second day after the bottle is opened. To be honest I was disappointed with this fizz. I had hoped it would be a gem of a bargain.
